Amir Cup: Al Rumaihi wins trap gold

Olympian Mohamed Al Rumaihi yesterday clinched gold medal at the men’s trap competition of the Amir Cup Shooting Championship at the Lusail Shooting Complex.

Lebanon’s Ahmad Daakour came second, while Oman’s Saleem Al Nasseri finished third.

Al Rumaihi, who represented Team Qatar at the Tokyo Games, shot down 44 targets, while Daakour and Al Nasseri hit 42 and 31 respectively. Last year’s gold medalist, Saeed Abusharib came fourth with 28 hits.  

“The competition was tough today, but I was confident after my qualifying round yesterday. I kept my nerves in the final to win the gold medal of this very prestigious event,” said Al Rumaihi, who scored 117 in the five rounds on Friday to qualify for the medal round.

Al Rumaihi lauded the participation of shooters from the Gulf region in the championship. 

“I am happy to see shooters from Oman and Lebanon in the completion as their participation makes the event more challenging,” the Olympian said.

Silver medallist Daakour also termed the competition tough. “It’s was challenging to perform here at the Lusail range, but I am happy to win the silver medal today,” Daakour said.

In the women’s Trap event, Noura Al Ali came first, Rooda Shams claimed second place while Banna Haji finished third. The defending champion Noura shot 36 targets to win the gold medal.

In the men’s Trap team event, Omani shooters won the gold medal defeating Qatar 1 team comprising Mohamed Al Rumaihi, Saeed Abusharib and Rashid Hamad Al Athba. Said Al Khatri, Saleem Al Nasseri and Abdullah Al Mandhari were the member of the victorious Omani team who shot 343 targets. Qatar 3 team represented by Khalid Al Muhannadi, Abdulbaset Mohsin and Rashid Saleh Al Athba came third with a score of 327.

Meanwhile, Qatar Shooting & Archery Association’s (QSAA) Secretary General Majid Ahmed Al Nuaim presented commemorative shields to the head of the Omani delegation Secretary General Mohamed Suleiman Al Hatali and representative of the Lebanese Shooting Federation Samer Sarkis.
