Reigning champions Argentina and Brazil continued their winning run at the Qatar Ooredoo World Padel Championship 2021, overcoming their respective opponents on the final day of group stage at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, yesterday. 


The proceedings were graced by H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President, Qatar Olympic Committee.


Argentina defeated Denmark 3-0 while Brazil prevailed over hosts Qatar with an identical score-line.    


Yesterday, Argentina’s Agustin Tapia and Carlos Daniel Gutierrez opened up for the 10-time champions with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Danish pair of Esben Hess-Olesen and Elholm Mads, before Fernando Belasteguin and Maximiliano Sanchez outwitted Emil Domela Hansen and Tobias Galskov 6-1, 6-0 for a 2-0 lead.


Federico Chingotto and Franco Stupaczuk completed a resounding win in 45 minutes, beating Martin Monrad Pedersen and Mads Laudrup 6-2, 6-1.  


Meanwhile, Lucas Campagnolo and Joao Pedro Florez combined to beat Abdulla Ali Al Hijji and Issa Shannan Al Harrasi 6-1, 6-1 in the first game. Brazil then took a 2-0 lead over Qatar, with Lucas Bergamini and Stefano Palma Florez defeating Saadon Al Kuwari and Mohammed Abdulla 6-3, 6-1.


Julio Cesar Julanoti and Matheus Simonato wrapped up a 3-0 win after outclassing Jabor Mohammed Al Mutawa and Mousa Shanan Zayed 6-1, 6-0.              


Also yesterday in men’s draw, France beat Poland 3-0; Chile blanked Great Britain 3-0 and Spain outsmarted United States 3-0.


In women’s draw, Brazil, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy and France were among the teams to register wins on the final day of group stage. The quarter-finals will be played today.


Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the Qatar Tennis, Squash and Badminton Federation (QTSBF) confirmed that the success achieved by the World Padel Championship came from the testimony of all the participating teams, guests and delegations.


He continued, "Everyone here in the tournament is grateful to the State of Qatar and QTSBF for hosting the World Championship and for the excellent organisation and provision of all facilities amid elaborate precautionary measures to preserve the safety of everyone."
