The State of Qatar has given great attention to the protection of the environment and the preservation of its natural resources for the sake of future generations, saying that it has placed this issue among its priorities.

This came in the statement of the State of Qatar, which was delivered by Advisor at the Office of the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rashid Al Suwaidi, before the Human Rights Council at its 49th session, during the interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment.

Al Suwaidi praised the report prepared by the Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment in cooperation with the Special Rapporteur on the implications of managing resources and hazardous waste, stressing that the State of Qatar shares their view on the need to take immediate and urgent measures to combat human rights violations resulting from environmental pollution, especially in the most affected areas, and to adopt a human rights-based approach to prevent exposure to pollution and ensure a healthy, safe and sound environment.

He pointed out that the State of Qatar has created a new ministry concerned with the environment and climate change to ensure continuous and systematic attention to this issue, in addition to its launch last November of a national strategy for environment and climate change, and the adoption of the Qatar National Climate Change Action Plan, in implementation of the Qatar National Vision 2030 and its fourth pillar concerned with the environment, which is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.

He explained that the State of Qatar has adopted many projects and initiatives that contribute to creating a suitable environment by reducing air pollutants, reducing carbon dioxide emissions, increasing investments and relying on renewable energy sources such as solar energy.

Al Suwaidi also stressed that the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which will be hosted by the State will be environmentally friendly as it will be the first "carbon neutral" tournament, pointing out that the stadiums hosting these finals are designed according to international standards that reduce energy and water consumption, which contributes to reducing carbon emissions, and that will promote the adoption of sustainable practices in sporting events around the world in the future.
