The Peninsula

Nasser Al Attiyah and his French co-driver Mathieu Baumel made a blazing start to their 2022 Baja Espana Aragon (fourth round of the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Bajas) campaign winning the first two Super Stages (SS1 & SS2) yesterday.

The Qatari set the pace from the start, winning the first 180km special stage.

Al Attiyah, the defending Baja Espana champion, was fastest at all the intermediate points of the route and was 2’01” ahead of Yazeed Al Rajhi at the end of the special. Third to finish was Brazilian Lucas Moraes in a Toyota Hilux, 3’50” behind the leader.

After a short service, the crews tackled the second special stage of the day, the longest of the weekend with 222kms against the clock where again in the cars section, Al Attiyah took the top honours. Today, SS3 will take place over 160kms which will decide the eventual winners.

Al Attiyah had scored his fourth victory in Aragon Rally following a fantastic battle in the last special stage in the event’s 37th edition in 2021.
