CHESS: QATAR BECOMES MEMBER OF PRESIDENTIAL OFFICE OF FIDE

Batumi, Georgia- Qatar has become a member of the presidential office of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), here on Wednesday.

The FIDE, held elections on the sidelines of the World Chess Olympiad No. 43, which is currently held in the Georgian city of Batumi. 

The Qatari national team player and former Women’s World Champion, Grand Master Zhu Chen, won the post of Treasurer in the elections in which Russian Arkady Dvorkovich was elected new President of FIDE with a total of 103 votes against 78 votes for Greek Georgios Makropoulos, former FIDE's deputy president. 

Members of the Presidential Ticket of Arkady Dvorkovich are elected into office: Bachar Kouatly, Deputy President; Sewa Enyonam Fumey, General Secretary; Mahir Mammedov, Vice President; and Julio Granda Zuniga, Vice President.

Qatar team player Zhu Chen expressed her happiness at winning the position and the great trust she received from the FIDE General Assembly, noting that she now has a major role in developing the game and improving the financial resources of the international federation. 

The Qatari player thanked the Qatar Olympic Committee, the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Qatar Chess Association for their great support in reaching this position, saying that this position will give Qatar a significant role in the development of this sport in the future. 

In his turn, head of the Qatar Chess Association Mohammed Al Medaihki expressed his great satisfaction with Zhu Chen's winning of this international position, adding that Qatar's membership in the international federation is a big gain for Qatari, Arab and Asian chess.
