Missing FIFA World Cup Qatar is traumatic, says Algeria’s Guedioura

Qatar Tribune

Algeria and Al Duhail midfielder Adlene Guedioura has revealed his ongoing anguish after failing to qualify for the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar. During the qualifiers, the Fennec Foxes were defeated by Cameroon.

The 36-year-old told the BBC’s World Football podcast that losing the Confederation of African Football (CAF) third-round tie has left him with mental and emotional problems. After seeing Qatar 2022 as an almost home World Cup, he describes the loss as a “trauma.”

“It’s going to be a trauma in my head because I’m 36 now and I still have a lot in the tank. It was my life’s hope to play the World Cup here (in Qatar). I’m quite familiar with this country, the manager (of Algeria) lives in Qatar as well. Many players play here, so for us, it was kind of a World Cup in our second country.

Guedioura currently plays for Al Duhail in the Qatar Stars League. He previously played for Al-Gharafa from 2019 to 2021, having previously played for Wolves, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Watford, Middlesbrough, and Sheffield United.

Guedioura, a French-born midfielder, made 62 appearances for Algeria and appeared three times as a substitute in the 2010 World Cup.
