Tournament favourites Brazil were eliminated from the World Cup as Croatia kept their nerve to edge through to the semi-finals on penalties.

After a thrilling 90 minutes, Tite's men finally got ahead in extra time when Neymar scored a thumping effort to equal Pelé’s 77-goal record for Brazil.

However, Bruno Petkovic, who came on in the second half, equalised in the 116th minute with Croatia’s first shot on target to send the game into their second penalty shootout in as many matches.

Croatia, who finished as runners up in 2018, netted all four of their penalties, while Brazil’s first attempt, by Rodrygo, was saved by Dominik Livakovic, and Marquinhos - who stepped up fourth - hit the woodwork to set up a semi-final meeting with the Netherlands or Argentina on Tuesday.

The Netherlands will face Argentina at 10pm at Lusail Stadium as the fate of both sides is decided.
