Goals from Aurelien Tchouameni and Olivier Giroud were enough for France to claim the last semi-final spot at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 as the reigning champions beat England 2-1 at Al Bayt Stadium in a clash of the European heavyweights.

Harry Kane's late penalty miss proved decisive after he had earlier equalled Wayne Rooney's record of 53 goals for his country.

Tchouameni put France ahead after 17 minutes, firing past Jordan Pickford from 25-yards out.

Nine minutes into the second half Tchouameni fouled Bukayo Saka in the box and England were awarded a penalty. Harry Kane stepped up, beating Tottenham team-mate Hugo Lloris to bring England level.

However, France took the lead yet again in the 78th minute, as Olivier Giroud headed in a cross from Antoine Griezmann, but almost immediately after, England had a chance to draw level when Theo Hernandez fouled Mason Mount in the box.

Kane had the opportunity to send the match into extra time to give his side a fighting chance of pregression, but he fired his penalty over the net to end England's World Cup dream.

France will now take on Morocco in the semi-finals at 10pm on Wednesday the 14th of December at Al Bayt Stadium.
