QFA Announce Carlos Queiroz as new Head Coach of Qatar National Team

Caitlin Dillon

The Qatar Football Association has announced the appointment of Carlos Queiroz as the new manager of the Qatar national team, following the departure of their former coach Felix Sanchez.

The Portuguese manager, who most recently led Iran to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, began his managerial career with the Portuguese Under-20 team, guiding them to wins at the FIFA World Youth Championships in 1989 and 1991.

Quieroz has previously served as the manager of renowned European teams, including Real Madrid, and as the assistant manager of Manchester United. The 69-year-old coach has also led numerous national teams, including Portugal, South Africa, Colombia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates.

During his almost eight-year-long stint in Iran between 2011 and 2019, Queiroz became the side’s longest-standing manager, and the only coach in history to have coached the squad to three consecutive World Cups (2014, 2018 & 2022). Prior to Qatar 2022, Queiroz returned to Iran and helped them to secure Asia’s top spot in the FIFA rankings for the first time in history - a position they held until after the tournament.
