High-Octane competition as the 9th Sports Tournament for GCC Universities Continues in Doha

Day 3 of the ninth edition of the Sports Tournament for GCC Universities and Higher Education Institutes concluded on Monday with Oman's University of Technology and Applied Sciences topping the general standings after claiming three gold medals out of a total of five.

The competitions took place at the track of the Khalifa International Stadium.

In swimming, Imam Abdul Rahman bin Faisal University of Saudi Arabia claimed four gold medals out of a total of five.

In football, Saudi Arabia's Taibah University defeated the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training of Kuwait (PAAET) 3-1, while the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) suffered a 2-1 loss to University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST), their second successive defeat in the tournament.

Kuwait University defeated King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals 1-0, while Qatar University lost 0-5 to Jazan University. Oman's University of Technology and Applied Sciences defeated the United Arab Emirates University 2-0.

Dean of Student Affairs at the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training, Kuwait Dr. Abdul Karim Salman Al Urayer highlighted the importance of the tournament as it allows the students to move from academic life to their hobbies and enhance connection among students.

Al Urayer, who is a member of the supervisory committee for the tournament, stressed that the competitions were high-octane and the students had strong prior preparedness.

Former Qatar athlete Jamal Hiran who played for UDST, expressed his great happiness at winning the silver medal in the 400-meter dash. He expressed his great admiration for the purpose of the tournament, stressing that it helps students to develop in sports.

Organized by the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), the tournament is due to run through Feb. 10. It brought together 471 students representing 15 universities.
