World Championships will boost judo in Qatar and region, says Japan envoy

The upcoming World Judo Championships in Doha in 2023 will not only promote the Japanese martial art and Olympic sport, but will also significantly advance the most well-known traditional wrestling sport in Qatar and the region.

Ambassador of Japan to Qatar, H E Satoshi Maeda said: “I am certain that the event will make great contribution to the promotion of Judo in the country and the [Middle East] region.”

Aside from the promotion of the Olympic sport, the envoy said that he is confident that the event “will strengthen the Japan-Qatar bilateral cooperation in the fields of sports and culture.”

He further disclosed that the Qatar Olympic Committee and the Embassy of Japan are actively discussing possible partnerships before and during the event time in order to further strengthen the bilateral ties in various domains on this occasion.

Maeda explained that “it is a great pleasure and excitement that the World Judo Championships will be held in Qatar. The Japanese community in Qatar, Japanese people in Japan and myself are eagerly looking forward to the event.”

“Please visit the championship and watch the world’s top class performance by the Japanese Judo athletes!,” Ambassador Maeda added.

In a message, International Judo Federation President, Marius Vizer said: “Qatar is a country which holds dear its history and traditions and therefore respects judo’s history and values. In Doha we will enjoy the perfect mix of spectacle, excellence and friendship. Athletes from all continents will be welcomed here once again.”

Before this Championships, Qatar hosted the 2021 World Judo Masters.

“As we head towards Paris 2024, pulling together as a sporting community, we showcase our sport in Doha within an environment that prioritises safety, fair play and inspiration.”

Judo events of Paris 2024 will take place between July 27 and August 3 under men’s, women’s and mixed teams categories.

The World Judo Championships – Doha 2023 will run from May 7 to 14 and will be held at Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena.
