Switzerland's Stump, Canada's Deguchi captures Gold at Judo World Championships

Swiss athlete Nils Stump was crowned the men's under 73 kg gold medal on the third day of the Judo World Championships - Doha 2023, while Canadian athlete Christa Deguchi won the women's under 57 kg gold medal.

The competitions were intense for both the men's and women's on the third day, as 55 athletes competed in the men's under 73 kg category, starting from the preliminary rounds and reaching the finals.

Stump defeated Italian athlete Manuel Lombardo to win the gold medal, with Lombardo receiving the silver medal. Uzbek athlete Murodjon Yuldoshev and former world champion, Japanese athlete Soichi Hashimoto, both won bronze medals.

In the women's under 57 kg category, 50 athletes competed from the preliminary rounds to the finals, where Canadian athlete Christa Deguchi defeated Japanese athlete Haruka Funakobo to win the gold medal. Mongolian athlete Enkhriilen Lkhagvatogoo and Canadian athlete Jessica Klimkait both won bronze medals.

HE Chairman of Media and Broadcasting Committee for the Judo World Championships - Doha 2023 Sheikh Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani expressed his happiness with the success that the championship has achieved since its kickoff.

He pointed out that the local organizing committee receives praise on a daily basis from all guests of Qatar, whether participating players, presidents of national and continental federations present in Doha on the sidelines of that international event, as well as media representatives covering the event.

His Excellency said that the opening ceremony was broadcasted live on TV channels for the first time in the history of the International Judo Federation (IJF). In addition, a workshop was held for media representatives before the kickoff of the event, which is an initiative that affirms the organizational level that the State of Qatar has reached through its host of several major sporting events over the past few years.

He considered that this organizational excellence affirms that Qatar always remains the prime supporter of the international Olympic movement, especially in light of the humanitarian sporting initiatives such as the refugees' program and other programs in cooperation with the international Olympic committee and international sports federations.

He pointed out that more than 100 channels in over 190 countries are following and covering this international event, which guarantees that this championship will reach a large segment of judo lovers around the world. He noted that the Media and Broadcasting Committee is cooperating with various media to present the best media coverage for the championship to present the event in the best way possible.

For his part, Director General of the International Judo Federation Vlad Marinescu expressed his admiration for the opening ceremony and the Qatari organization of the championship, pointing out that the opening ceremony gave a glimpse of Qatar's history, heritage, and advancement until it became a worldwide known destination, in addition to presenting Qatar's history and relationship with sports.

In a statement, Marinescu indicated that the opening ceremony received wide and comprehensive media coverage by various media for the first time in the history of the game, explaining that the championship's competitions are broadcasted in 190 countries through TV broadcasts from Doha.
