Buenos Aires, Argentina- The third edition of ‘Summer Youth Olympic Games- Buenos Aires 2018’ began with an exceptional opening ceremony.

For the first time in the history of the modern Olympic Games, the opening ceremony was held on the street, with the celebration open to all - and over 200.000 people showed up for the party.

Young Qatari swimmer Yaqoub al-Khulaifi carried the Qatari flag during the opening ceremony of the Youth Olympic Games.

Addressing the young athletes, IOC President Thomas Bach said: “To get here, each of you trained and competed hard. You gave your best in the sport you love so much. This is why you deserve to be here, at your Games. Every athlete is different. We all come from different parts of the world and have different cultures. But we are all united by the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect."

The opening ceremony was attended by HE Jassim Al Buenain, Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) and Khaleel Al Jabir, President of the Qatar Swimming Federation.

Athletes representing Qatar are hurdler Awab Baro, discus thrower Ahmed al-Haj, swimmers Abdul Aziz Mohamed and Yacoub al-Khulaifi and Equestrian player Mohamed al-Kashouti.

Al Khulaifi will begin his campaign in the games on Monday as he will participate in the qualifications of 100m Butterfly event.
