Head coach Ithsara Sritharo is committed to steering Thailand back to their strengths when they face Tajikistan in their decisive AFC U23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024™ Group C tie on Monday.

Following their 5-0 defeat to Saudi Arabia on Friday, Thailand find themselves tied on three points with Iraq, who bounced back into knockout stage contention after beating Tajikistan 4-2.

That means Thailand - if they want to advance to the quarter-finals for just the second time in history - must clinch all three points at the Al Janoub Stadium.

“We know our concept and we know where the mistakes were in the last game (against Saudi Arabia),” said Sritharo. “We will rethink our defence and find the best choice. We need to focus on ourselves, stay strong and stay together.

“It is all about recovering well and being super ready for the next one. We know this last game is the most important. It’s the one that decides if our Olympic dream continues.”

Tajikistan, meanwhile, have shown they are not to be underestimated.

Despite their defeat to Iraq, their aggressive playstyle and capability to match the 2013 champions in shots on target and possession show they can capitalise on any lapse in focus.

Head coach Mubin Ergashev will count on his key players - especially Rustam Soirov who has scored twice so far - with Tajikistan still having a mathematical chance of advancing.

Their debut campaign two years ago ended in three defeats but with the Central Asian side having impressed against Saudi Arabia and Iraq, Thailand will have to be at their defensive best.
