Daniel Cormier Questions Khamzat Chimaev's Meteoric Rise and Future in the UFC

Daniel Cormier Questions Khamzat Chimaev

Alkass Digital

Daniel Cormier believes that Khamzat Chimaev's explosive start in the UFC set an impossibly high standard. Chimaev gained immediate attention by winning two fights in just 10 days on "Fight Island" in 2020. Despite maintaining an undefeated record in seven UFC bouts, his activity has significantly decreased in recent years.

Chimaev's last fight was a majority decision victory over Kamaru Usman at UFC 294 in October, marking his sole bout in nearly two years. Although scheduled to headline UFC on ABC 6 against Robert Whittaker, he withdrew due to illness.

Cormier, speaking on "Good Guy/Bad Guy" with Chael Sonnen, questions whether Chimaev has lost momentum since defeating former champion Usman. He reflects on Chimaev's initial burst onto the scene with two quick wins and a knockout victory over Gerald Meerschaert at the Apex. However, Cormier wonders if Chimaev's early success was unsustainable, particularly noting his decision win over Usman and subsequent absence from competition.

Despite rumors suggesting Chimaev might consider retirement, his manager confirmed his intention to continue fighting. However, UFC President Dana White admitted challenges in planning Chimaev's next fight amid ongoing setbacks.
