Qatar's legendary high jumper, Mutaz Barshim, has announced that the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics will be his final appearance at the Olympic Games.

Barshim, who clinched the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, stated: "Between the joy of achieving a dream and the sadness of its end, the Paris 2024 Olympics will be my last Olympic participation."

He reflected on his journey with pride and gratitude, especially for the opportunity to represent Qatar in three consecutive Olympics.

Throughout his Olympic career, Barshim has been a formidable competitor.

He began his Olympic journey at the London 2012 Games, where he won a silver medal, followed by another silver medal at Rio 2016, and ultimately a gold medal in Tokyo 2020.

"I have enjoyed my Olympic journey through all its highs and lows, challenges and difficulties, from which I have gained vast experience and learned countless lessons," Barshim shared.

He hopes to inspire and mentor future generations to continue Qatar's legacy in athletics.

“I hope to pass on these experiences to future generations,” he added.

As he prepares for his final Olympic appearance, Barshim is also set to be the flag bearer for Qatar at the Paris 2024 opening ceremony.

“Now, with less than a month to go until the opening of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, my last stop as an athlete, I am honored and proud to be the flag bearer at the opening ceremony, God willing,” Barshim concluded.

Beyond the Olympics, Barshim has enjoyed a significant career, including three constitutive gold medals at three consecutive World Championships – London 2017, Doha 2019 and Eugene, USA 2022 – becoming the first athlete in history to achieve the title three times in the high jump event in the process.

Barshim's retirement from the Olympic competition marks the end of an era for the Qatari athlete, but his legacy is sure to continue influencing and inspiring athletes in Qatar for many years to come.
