Yesterday, Panos Yiannara was
named the new Head Coach of the national basketball team. The Serb has been
brought in following Tim Lewis’ departure from the club, following a series of
poor results, especially during the FIBA qualifiers and the Asian Games.
“It’s a huge honour for me to be in this position
and I want to thank the federation for giving me this opportunity,” said
Yiannara.
“I believe we have a good group of guys with huge potentials
and the goal is to get them prepared for FIBA qualifying games.
“We want to become better every day and help the young guys
to grow and hopefully build a solid national team for Qatar,” he added.
His first test will come in just over a month when Qatar face
Japan in the next round of FIBA World Cup qualifiers. Given Qatar’s position at
the bottom of the table, having only won two of their eight games, it will be
no small feat.
