Doha, Qatar- Aspetar, the orthopaedic and sports medicine hospital in Qatar, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Samla Qatar.

The agreement, signed at Aspetar on Thursday, will pave the way for the two organisations to provide medical support for Qatari athletes, who would take part in the international Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) running competition, which will take place in the Sultanate of Oman for the first time from November 26 to December 3.

The MoU was signed by the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Aspetar, Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Kuwari, and the CEO of Samla Qatar, Mr. Azzam Al Mannai.

As well as agreeing to provide medical support, both parties will enhance the athletic performance of the contestants who will represent Qatar in the prestigious long-distance trial running event.

As per the agreement, Aspetar will provide comprehensive medical assessments tailored to meet the needs of each of the three Qatari participants and will assist the athletes to maximise their performances. The athletes will be under the supervision of an international team of world-class sports medicine physicians.

The long-distance trail running event by UTMB will see an international field of 300 runners take on a non-stop rugged 137km (85mile) course over the varied and mountainous terrain of Oman’s Jebel Akhdar. UTMB was created in 2003 in Chamonix, France, and has quickly grown to become the “World’s Summit of Trail Running”.

Earlier this year, Aspetar provided medical support to 200 athletes competing in the Samla race. The race involved a series of challenges over a 200km trek that began in Zekreet and ended in Zubara Castle. The challenges included running, shooting, swimming, cycling and kayaking.
