ASPETAR CONCLUDES THEIR INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MEDICINE AND SCIENCE IN ATHLETICS

Saad Al-Suwaidi

The international conference on medicine and science in athletics hosted by Aspetar is being held at the football high performance center at aspire academy. The conference offers the opportunity to combine an athletics focused professional development using a world-class faculty of clinicians and scientists with seeing elite athletes in action during the 2019 IAAF Doha diamond league.

The 3 day conference invites local and international experts to share some of the latest insights and research available from Aspetar and other leading regional and international bodies, culminating in group discussions to address topics such as optimising health and performance in athletics, heat acclimation and cooling, athletes’ experiences of injuries, performance nutrition and common illnesses in athletics

Director of medical education and chairmen of the scientific planning committee, Dr. Paul Dijkstra, discussed more about the press conference:

“What a great opportunity to celebrate athletics specifically this year and specifically this weekend. We just had the Doha Diamond League for Athletics last night at the Khalifa International Stadium, some wonderful performances, and in September and October, Qatar is hosting the World Championship for athletics. This conference is put together by Aspetar and Aspire Academy to celebrate Athletics, specifically medicine and science in athletics”.

Sports medicine physician and co-chair of the scientific planning committee Dr. Juan-Manuel Alonso, emphasized on the importance and development of medicine and science in athletics

“Science is very important in any sport. Science is the support for performance, for improvement, for health and for safety. We are very happy here to have this important conference, because this is giving us support in the daily practices in hospitals and also in our medical service organisation for the world athletics championships, as they provide us with tools and skills to take care of the athletes and to protect their health and safety”.
