QATAR’S TAMIMI ENTERS QUARTERS

Doha, Qatar- Fifth-seed Abdulla Al Tamimi entered the quarter-finals of the QSF No.1, PSA World Tour Bronze tournament at the At the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, here on Sunday.
Tamimi beat Iker Pajares Bernabeu 11-9, 12-14, 11-8, 11-3 in less than an hour. It was a good result for the Qatari considering that it was a day of upsets with seeded players Cameron Pilley of Australia and Chris Simpson of England being shown the door.
The World No.28, Tamimi, won the first game on a easy note, but failed to keep the momentum going in the second, which he lost. He came back strongly in the third and went on to wrap the match in the last one.
Tamimi now faces third-seed Daryl Selby in the last eight stage. Selby, the World No. 24 from England, overpowered 39-year-old Olli Tuominen of Finland, 4-11, 11-3, 13-11, 11-7 in 53 minutes.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Ivan Yuen, defeated seventh-seed Simpson in straight games 11-6, 11-9, 11-9.
Yuen takes on another unseeded player George Parker of England in the quarters. Parker upset fourth-seed Pilley 17-15, 11-5, 11-7 in 42 minutes.
Both Simpson and Pilley had got a bye to the second round but failed to live up to their seedings.
On Saturday, two local players too made an exit. Wildcards Hamad Al Hamri and Rashid Al Harib, both fell in respective straight games defeats to Egypt’s Mohamed Reda and England’s Joshua Masters, respectively.
Meanwhile, Malaysian youngster Eain Yow Ng, who had ousted Tamimi during the Qatar Classic, failed to live up to his ‘giant killer’ expectations on Sunday. The former world junior champion lost to Englishman to Joshua Masters in a five-game thriller which went on for 69 minutes.
Masters will take on top seed Egyptian Omar Mosaad who advanced with a 3-1 win over Christopher Binnie of Jamaica 11-3, 11-7, 7-11, 11-6 in 52 minutes.
