CHERIF, AHMED TOP GROUP WITH BACK-TO-BACK WINS

Qatar’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan topped Pool D with their second win in a row during in the group stage of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Hamburg, Germany, yesterday.


The world’s number-six ranked beach volleyball duo, fought back after losing the first set to clinch a 2-1 (18-21, 21-13, 18-16) win against their Czech counterparts, Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner.


Cherif and Ahmed defeated Italy’s Enrico Rossi and Adrian Ignacio Carambula in their opening match on Friday in a similar manner.


The Qatari pair is the leading duo in Asia, having won the Asian Games and Asian Championship staying undefeated throughout. Besides, they have won three bronze medals in high-ranking events on the FIVB Beach World Tour.


Their confidence level should be high, entering the event.


In three last events on the World Tour, Cherif and Ahmed secured the third spot in the Four-Star Xiamen Open and followed it up with a 17th spot in the Four-Star Ostrava Open and were placed ninth in the Four-Star Warsaw Open. They also featured in two non-Tour events and won them to give a winning lift to their confidence and form.


Today, the second Qatari pari at the $1m Championships, Assam Ahmed Mahmoud and Tamer Abdelrasoul will meet Brazil’s Alison Cerutti and Álvaro Morais Filho in their second Group E match.
