MOMENT OF ‘PRIDE’: AL THAWADI

The Peninsula

Expressing his delight on unveiling of the design for Lusail Stadium, Hassan Al Thawadi Secretary-General, Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, termed the development as ‘very important’.

Lusail Stadium, the 80,000-capacity venue will play host to opening and final games of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. It is the eighth venue for the 2022 World Cup.

“The announcement of the design of the stadium is very important. It’s the last stadium and the main stadium as well. Off course, having the honour of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani attending the gathering is absolutely fantastic as well, having Secretary General of the UN (Antonio Guterre), President of Ecuador (Lenín Moreno), and high level of delegation attending the dinner is no doubt for us a moment of pride,” Al Thawadi said.

Commenting on the matter of expanding the World Cup to 48 teams, Al Thawadi, said: ”FIFA President (Gianni Infantino) has commended the great work that he has seen on the ground. The great progress that has been made so we focus on that. In relation to the issue of 48 teams, he has also mentioned that there is a feasibility study that is being undertaken and ultimately the decision will be made by FIFA and Qatar. So until the feasibility happens and finalised there is not much to comment about that.”
