Mutaz Barshim wins the first gold medal for Qatar in the men's high jump event. The athlete is coming off of a 14 months injury where doctors have advised the athlete not to participate.
After clearing a mark of 2.19, 2.24, 2.27, 2.30 the athlete passed the 2.33 mark in his last attempt. Barshim completed the 2.35 and the 2.37 with ease after his struggle with the 2.33 mark. Mikhail Akimenko, Ilya Ivanyuk, and Maksim Nedasekau did not successfully pass the 2.37 mark which let to Mutaz Barshim's big win.
"I wasn't really ready but that they did that, they are the real champions, they lift(ed) me up today... I have nothing to say they are the champions you can ask them," said Mutaz Barshim after his win.
The action-packed night welcomed a full stadium including HH the Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani and HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani.
History was made in the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 day 8 in Khalifa International Stadium. Qatar the first in its region to host the event holds 2 medals a bronze for Samba and gold for Barshim.
