Qatar Football Federation announced on Twitter that injured defender Bassam Al Rawi will miss the remaining matches of the 24th Arabian Gulf Cup.

Al Rawi was injured in the Group A match against Iraq of the regional championship at the Khalifa International Stadium on Tuesday.

The tests conducted on Al Rawi showed that he had a broken leg that needed surgery.

Hosts Qatar lost their opening group match 2-1. In the other match of the same group on Tuesday, UAE defeated Yemen 3-0. Qatar takes on Yemen in their next match tomorrow while UAE faces Iraq. Two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-final stage of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Iraqi player Ahmed Ibrahim complimented his younger players for having raised the bar which got them a win against Qatar.

“Before the game, our circumstances were difficult and it was clear to everyone whether we talked about the absence of the police club’s players or professional players abroad,” Ibrahim said after the win over the hosts.

“Our preparations for the Qatari team in Doha was for three days only with the presence of only 11 players, but the coaching staff chose what is appropriate in relation to the current circumstances, I would like to thank all the young players who have done well.”
