Preserving Qatar

Saad Al-Suwaidi

"Al Ma'zab Al Sagheer" is a three-day camp, organised by Al Gannas Society, teaching the Qatari youth about their cultural values. Mr. Hamad bin Saad Al-Nuaimi, the supervisor of the camp, said that the launching of the 4th edition had over 40 participants, taking place in the open desert, teaching the younger generation the heritage of their parents and grandparents.

This year’s camp introduces “Qatari way of life”, which involves teaching participants the way of survival their ancestors carried out during their time. Cultural values were also bein taught through several other activities such as horse and camel riding, archery, falconry, hunting, greyhound hunting, the etiquette of the majlis, mannerism as well as nightly Islamic lessons. Prizes are distributed to the top 3 participants for each activity at the end of the camp.

The camp is organised by the Al Gannas Society, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Nomas Centre. Al Ma’zab comes within the framework of preserving Qatar’s heritage, and to instill the values within the youth so that it can be taught from generation to generation.

The turnout for "Al Ma'zab Al Sagheer" continues to grow, showing signs of an impact it has on the younger Qatari generation wanting to participate, making the effort of preserving Qatar’s heritage amongst locals more achievable.
