The Doha Fencing Grand Prix 2020 came to a close this evening with two thrilling finals.

The competition began on the 24th of January with two days of qualifying rounds. The final day saw Olympic hopefuls compete from the Round of 64 through to the Final, hoping to gain enough points to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Ana Maria Popescu of Romania claimed gold in the women’s final after defeating Italian Mara Navarria. Meanwhile in the men’s final, Russian Sergey Bida fought off his opponent, Alexandre Bardenet of France, in order to get his hands on a gold medal.

The Fencing Grand Prix will continue in Budapest, Hungary on the 6th of March before continuing on to Cali, Colombia in May, giving athletes two more opportunities to secure their ticket to Tokyo.
