Qatar Springs into Action on 9th National Sports Day

Caitlin Dillon

Qatar National Sports Day is in full swing throughout the country, with Qatar’s population embracing a day of fitness.

Initiated in 2012, Qatar National Sports Day falls on the second Tuesday of February each year, and is declared a national holiday. Sports Day aims to promote healthy lifestyles, whilst educating the population on ways to reduce health risks such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which are associated with sedentary lifestyles.

Festivities are taking place at various locations throughout the city, including Aspire Zone, Msheireb, Katara and Qatar Foundation.

With the participation of more than one hundred institutions, including ministries, governmental bodies, sports clubs, academies and schools, the free activities open to the public throughout Qatar include football, basketball, tennis, taekwondo, cycling, swimming, and walking.
