The Premier League will officially return on Wednesday 17 June.

According to a statement from league officials released on Thursday evening, the date has been agreed and top flight football in England will resume after exactly 100 days.

The date was agreed by a majority of clubs in a meeting which took almost eight hours.

Four teams in the league have one game in hand, so Manchester City v Arsenal and Aston Villa v Sheffield United will take place on 17 June.

Those fixtures will bring all teams level on 29 games played, allowing the season to resume in full on the weekend of 20-21 June. That could be the weekend Liverpool finally lift the title, ending their 30-year wait.

The remaining matchdays will then be played up until 1-2 August, which has been pencilled in as the final weekend of the campaign.

In a statement, the new chief executive Richard Masters said: ”

Today we have provisionally agreed to resume the Premier League on Wednesday 17 June.

“But this date cannot be confirmed until we have met all the safety requirements needed, as the health and welfare of all participants and supporters is our priority.

“Sadly, matches will have to take place without fans in stadiums, so we are pleased to have come up with a positive solution for supporters to be able to watch all the remaining 92 matches.

“The Premier League and our clubs are proud to have incredibly passionate and loyal supporters. It is important to ensure as many people as possible can watch the matches at home.

“We will continue to work step-by-step and in consultation with all our stakeholders as we move towards resuming the 2019/20 season.”
