Mexican ambassador to Qatar Graciela Gomez Garcia hailed the success of the country in organising the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup in an exemplary manner, in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, praising Qatar’s sports diplomacy, which she described as a long-term vision and an ideal way to unite ranks and bring people together.

The ambassador said that she enjoyed the contemporary organisation of two wonderful versions of the Club World Cup in Qatar, with Mexican clubs CF Monterrey and Tigres UANL making it to the event, taking into account that the previous version was set up in normal conditions compared to the current version, was organised during a worldwide pandemic.

She explained that Qatar placed health as a top priority during the organisation of the FIFA Club World Cup, and has taken every possible step to preserve the safety of all participants, including teams, officials, organisers and fans.

She stressed that the Qatari authorities in general have done exceptional work since the beginning of the pandemic, in terms of adopting precautionary measures to contain the spread of the virus. She noted the strategy followed by Qatar in providing support for partnerships and various sectors, as well as conducting extensive (covid-19) tests, are all positive things.

The Mexican ambassador expressed her overwhelming happiness after Tigres reached the World Cup final after defeating Palmeiras (1-0) in the semi-finals.

She expressed her regret that Tigres fans were not able to travel to Doha and celebrate with their team, due to the ongoing pandemic, noting that the Mexican community in Qatar supported Tigres and raised the banner of their country and not a specific team.

She said that Qatar and Mexico share many things, but the people do not know each other well. She explained that since her arrival to Qatar in 2019, she has been working to provide a clearer idea and a more accurate picture of what Qatar looks like, especially in terms of sports and what it is doing for the 2022 World Cup, and is also working to make the Qataris know everything about Mexico.

The ambassador said she hoped that Mexico would win the World Cup Qatar 2022, and that visitors in this tournament would have a wonderful experience during which they would gain different experiences and get acquainted with a new culture and a classy society that is friendly and welcoming. She stressed that the tournament itself will be highly organised in light of the capabilities of Qatar and the environmentally-friendly infrastructure and stadiums.

She referred to the work and co-operation between the Mexican embassy and the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy and her hopes to continue this co-operation in the future, and for Mexico to be a partner in the success of organising the World Cup, as well as for Qatar to provide support to Mexico, Canada and America when hosting the World Cup in 2026.

She praised the Qatari society, which she described as vibrant, diverse and multicultural, as many nationalities work together, stressing that Qatar has been able to create a balance among society as it preserved its traditions and heritage while witnessing developments on a global level everywhere in terms of universities, technology, infrastructure, and other things.
