Qatar Weightlifting and Fencing Federation (QWFF) has completed the preparations for the 2021 Qatar Fencing Grand Prix in FOIL, which will run over three days, March 26- 28, 2021, in Aspire Dome. The event will be held under strict precautionary measures, and all participants will be subject to a health bubble throughout the competition period.
Doha is set to host as a record number of top world fencers descend on Qatar for competition.
Regarding the latest preparations, QWFF Secretary-General and director of the championship Khalid Al Hammadi renewed the Federation's welcome of the international fencing family to Doha, looking forward to presenting a successful edition that adds to their previous successes which won praise from all participants in any tournament hosted by Doha.
Al Hammadi unveiled the details of the 2021 Qatar Fencing Grand Prix in FOIL, organized by QWFF in Aspire Dome. The tournament enjoys great interest, as it will be attended by a number of fencers from 39 countries with a total of 380 participants including players, coaches, and technical and administrative teams, he said, adding among them are the top 14 ranked fluorescent weapons in the world. He said that they were happy to cooperate with their permanent partners in Aspire who offer all their capabilities for the success of the championship.
In addition to the participants from all countries of the world, he said, there will be participants from Arab countries, as fencers from Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco will participate, including the Egyptian fencer Alaa Abul Qasim, who won the silver medal at the London Olympics, and the Tunisian fencer Ines Boubakri, the winner of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
The tournament is of great importance as it will be the last before the Tokyo Olympics 2021, and the top fencers are looking to get points in Doha that help towards qualification for Tokyo Olympic Games, he said, pointing out that despite the great difficulties facing the world due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Federation has made tremendous efforts to hold that tournament under the full supervision of the Ministry of Public Health and in accordance with the precautionary measures.
