Doha to host FIE Grand Prix from March 26

Reigning and former Olympic champions will feature in the FIE Grand Prix Doha that starts at the Aspire Dome on March 26 (Friday).

The three-day individual event in foil is organized by Qatar Weightlifting & Fencing Federation (QWFF) in cooperation with the Qatar Olympic Committee.

Delegates from 51 countries are taking part in this annual event which will also serve as an Olympic qualification with top-16 finishers will secure Olympic quota for the Tokyo Games.

“USA, Japan and Russia are leading the contingents with 35 representatives each. We also have a ten-member delegation from Egypt, three from Tunisia and one each from Morocco and Algeria,” said QWFF General-Secretary Khalid Issa Al Hamadi.

Russia’s reigning Olympic foil champion Inna Deriglazova, Italians Alice Volpi and Elisa Di Francisca are some of the big names.

In the men’s section, Italy’s Alessio Foconi, Enzo Lefort from France and USA’s Gerek Meinhardt will be ones to watch out for.

Qatar will field an eight-member team.

Ali Turki, Abdullah Ismail, Khaled Aref, Hussein Al Mutawa, and Faisal Al-Suwaidi are in the men’s event while Amira Boujbara, Lina Al Buainain, Ghraiba Dhahi and Rana Ibrahim will represent the women.
