DR THANI AL KUWARI WINS KEY OCA POST

Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) President H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, yesterday led Qatar’s delegation at the 38th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) in Bangkok, Thailand.


During the meeting, which was held under the chairmanship of Sheikh Ahmed Al Fahd Al Sabah, Dr Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, Second Vice-President of the QOC, was elected as Vice-President of the OCA for West Asia for the election cycle (2019-2023). Sheikh Ahmed was also re-elected as OCA chairman.


In a statement, Dr Thani Al Kuwari, thanked the country’s wise leadership and H E Sheikh Joaan for the great support for Qatari athletes in all continental and international forums.


“I am aware that the victory of this position puts a lot of burdens, but it is a demonstration of the full awareness of the youth sports leadership in Qatar, which has achieved a lot, not only in organising competitions but also in other areas to confirm that Qatar with its promising youth is able to achieve successes and win challenges,” he said.


During the meetings, Shahruk Erishkaran was elected to South-East Asia, Kazakh Minister Timur Gulipayev of Central Asia, Pakistan’s General Syed Arif Hassan of South Asia and Timothy Fook of Hong Kong from East Asia.


The Secretary General of the Omani Olympic Committee, Taha Al Kushri, was elected as a member in the Executive Office and the Chairman of the Omani Committee for Doping Control Sultan Al Busaidi was elected as Chairman of the Medical Committee of the Olympic Council.


The General Assembly of OCA confirmed the great harmony among its members, through the electoral process, where the President and his deputies won without any competition.
