State of Emergency Begins in Tokyo as Olympics Approach

QNA

Japanese authorities began implementing a state of emergency in the capital, Tokyo, on Monday to limit the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19), about 10 days before the start of the Summer Olympics.

Japanese officials asked their citizens to watch the games on television screens in their homes to contain the virus infection to the lowest degree possible. Last week, the tournament organizers decided not to allow local crowds to attend the tournament's events after a previous decision to not allow any public attendance from abroad either.

The Summer Olympics, which was postponed last year due to COVID-19 pandemic, will start on July 23 and will continue until August 8.
