Qatar Football Association (QFA) approved the request of Iraq Football Association to host the matches of the Iraqi national football team in the third round of the Asian qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
The Iraqi team will play in Group A which includes South Korea, Syria, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon.
The Iraqi team's first match will be against the South Korean team in Seoul on Sept. 2. Its second match will be against the Iranian team in Doha on Sept. 7.
The Iraqi team qualified for the third round after it finished second in the third group which was led by the Iranian team with 18 points, followed by the Iraqi team in runners-up with 17 points, to qualify together for the decisive third round of the qualifiers.
QFA hosting of the Iraqi team matches comes in light of the strong brotherly relations between Qatar Football Association and other federations, especially Iraq Football Association, and in accordance with the cooperation agreements signed between the two sides; in addition to Qatar's great success in hosting major tournaments in the past period amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
