Al Mohannadi to run for presidency of Asian Table Tennis Union

Khalil Ahmad Al Mohannadi, President of the Arab Table Tennis Federation and Qatar Table Tennis Association (QTTA) and First Vice-President of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), announced candidacy for the presidency of the Asian Table Tennis Union.

The elections will be held during the General Assembly of the Union, which will be held on the sidelines of the 2021 Men's and Women's Asian Table Tennis Championships, which Doha hosts at Lusail Multipurpose Hall from Sept. 28 to Oct. 5.

Qatar is the first Arab and Gulf country to win the honor of hosting the Asian Championship for the second time after the 2000 edition, which confirms the great position that Doha enjoys within the expanded family of global table tennis.

Doha will also host the second edition of the WTT Star Contender from Sept. 20 to Sept. 25 with the participation of the world's top ranked champions.

In press statements, Al Mohannadi stressed the importance of hosting the 2021 Men's and Women's Asian Table Tennis Championships in Doha, noting that Qatar is among only 7 countries that have had the honor of hosting the Championship over 49 years, and it is also the only country to have won the honor of hosting in the tournament on the West Asian region.

Al Mohannadi explained that the 2021 Asian Table Tennis Championships qualify for the 2022 World Team Table Tennis Championships in China (Chengdu 2022); and it will witness the convening of the electoral general assembly to elect the president, the first vice president and the rest of the deputies, as well as the members of the board of directors of the Asian Union, and the members of the board of directors of the international federation from the Asian continent.

Al Mohannadi noted Qatar's readiness to host the second edition of the WTT Star Contender, which will be held from Sept. 20 to 25 with the participation of 160 players representing 34 countries.

He indicated that the organizing committee worked on completing all the preparations, especially as it had great experience after the successful hosting of the first edition of the tournament in March.

He added that hosting the tournament enhances the confidence in the organizational capabilities of the State of Qatar which has become the focus of attention for champions of the game around the world.
