Lebanon faced off against Sudan in the second set of games
tonight, at the Education City Stadium, coming out of the fixture 1-0 victorious.
The game however had been overshadowed by the grandiosity of the clash between
two African giants whose crowd alone sent shockwaves in the city from Al Janoub
Stadium, and frankly paled in comparison in terms of general excitement on and
off the pitch.
Lebanon was gifted
the opening goal in the 76th minute as the Sudanese keeper lost
control of a loose ball that he attempted to deflect, sending it behind him and
into the goal. This fixture also saw its fair share of rough tackles, resulting
in two red cards in the game: one for each team.
On the other side of Doha however, was an outstanding match
between two of Africa’s most noteworthy teams who put on a great show for Al
Janoub’s packed stadium of spectators. The game ended 1-1, but even though neither
side came out on top, the level of play alone was enough to keep the fans happy.
The initial goal was scored in the 19th minute by Algeria’s Mohamed
Tougai, tapping in a pass from a set-piece. Egypt answered in the 60th
minute with a penalty scored by Amr El Soleya to equalize the game.
