FIE GRAND PRIX QATAR: ESTONIA’S OLYMPIC BRONZE MEDALLIST LEHIS WINS WOMEN’S EPEE TITLE

Estonia’s Olympic bronze medallist Katrina Lehis defeated compatriot Nelli Differti in the final to win the women’s Epee title at the FIE Grand Prix Qatar fencing here at the Aspire Dome on Sunday evening.

Lehis won 15-11 against her compatriot as three Estonians qualified for the last four stage to leave an indelible impression of their boundless talent.

Lehis, who won a gold medal in team epee and bronze in individual epee, was in stupendous form in the tournament right from the start.

The 27-year-old southpaw defeated Italian Marta Ferrari 15-9 in the first round, Laura Stahli of Switzerland 15-12 (second round), Italy’s Alberta Santuccio 15-9 in Round of 16, Renata Knapik-Miazga of Poland (15-13) in the quarterfinals and Marie-Florence Candedaam of France 15-14 in a closely fought semis.

Differt overcame her countrymate Erika Kirpu 12-11 to qualify for the final, but the euphoria didn’t last long as Lehis enjoyed an upper-hand in the title showdown.
