FOOTBALL SEASON SET TO END ON APRIL 30

Qatar Football Association

The Competitions Committee of the Qatar Football Association (QFA) has announced that the 2020-21 football season is expected to end on April 30.

The QFA said the 49th Amir Cup will be the last event of the 2020-2021 season though the match dates are yet to be announced.

Hamad Al-Mannai, Chairman of the Competitions Committee, QFA, said with the dates the AFC Champions League matches for the year 2021 still not confirmed, the QFA will wait for more time to announce the exact dates for the matches to be played in Qatar.

He said starting May 1, 2021, football clubs in Qatar will play without international players – either in domestic events or 2021 AFC Champions League fixtures – in case the Asian ruling body announces calendar amendments.

He added that the QFA Competitions Committee has decided to wait before announcing the program for the local tournaments to be played in the next three or four months.

He said the COVID-pandemic sweeping the globe had disrupted the plans of football bodies around Asia.

Al Mannai said Qatar’s national team plans have to be taken into account as well before finalising club fixtures for Amir Cup or other events.

Talal Al Kaabi, Executive Director of the National Teams Administration, said the April 30 date will help QFA work on the dates for the national teams once the regular football season ends.

It is worth mentioning that Qatar will feature in 2021 Copa America and then make its debut appearance at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the US.

Qatar, under coach Felix Sanchez, will also appear in the European part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in 2021 and 2022.
